Second Chance
PetSmart Volunteer Information
Questions? Lauren Jackson (573) 239-0428 or Christina Byrd (573) 507-8838
Anytime you let a cat out of their cage, make sure the outside door is closed so they can’t escape! Only let one cage out at a time so we keep illness to a minimum.
Ask adopters to use the hand sanitizer provided before and after petting EACH cat to avoid spread of illness (both cat and human).
Dropping Off a Foster Cat
If your foster is NOT eating Purina One (Healthy Kitten or Adult), bring with you a 10-day supply of food in a Ziploc bag labeled with their name. [We will have the Purina One foods there.]
Stop by any time during open hours (Monday-Saturday 9:00a-9:00p / Sunday 10:00a-7:00p) and ask at the front register for them to let you in the adoption area (say you’re with Second Chance).
Look in the roll cart in the adoption area and find the grey Second Chance binder. In the front pocket, you will find their PetSmart profile card, paper SC cage card, and rabies certificate (if applicable).
- REMOVE ANY COLLARS FROM YOUR CAT/KITTEN. For safety reasons, Petsmart does not allow cats in the adoption area to have any collars on (paper or regular).
- Write today’s date on the PetSmart profile card in the space provided with a dry erase marker.
- Hang up their PetSmart profile card on the front of their cage (there are hooks on the glass). This card is what viewers see when they’re looking into the adoption area.
- Tape their Second Chance cage card above the large enclosure within the adoption area. These should be placed in the same order of the cages. If more than one kitty is in the enclosure, stack the sheets vertically.
- Put their medical information sheet and rabies certificate (if they have one) into the white PetSmart binder or we are out of compliance. We must have the medical information and rabies certificate (if the cat is old enough) in the WHITE Petsmart binder for every cat currently there.
- If you have been instructed to apply revolution, there are pre-dosed syringes to apply to the back of their heads. If your foster has not received it in the last 30 days, we will ask you to apply it.
- Make sure they have food and water in their cage! (bowls and litterboxes are under the big cage)
Meet & Greet Volunteer Role
Our M&G hours will be Monday-Friday 6:00pm-8:00pm and Saturday & Sunday 10:00am-2:00pm. These are the times that the app checkers will set up appointments with applicants to meet PS kitties.
Consider this an “on call” position
- You’ll only need to be there when application checkers have coordinated M&Gs
- App checkers will contact that day’s volunteer if they have set up a M&G and will let the volunteer know what time and what cat(s) the applicant is interested in. But we usually find that people want to see all their options when they get there.
- If you haven’t been contacted, you do not need to go (but you’re welcome to go give the kitties some attention!)
You are there to talk to people who have questions about the cats, our adoption process, and Second Chance in general. If there’s a question you don’t know the answer to, take down their contact information and let Lauren and/or Christina know and we’ll respond.
If anyone stops by and is interested in adopting or learning about a particular cat, have them fill out an application (QR code is on the door!) and we’ll communicate with them ASAP.
If you notice that any cages need to be cleaned or litter needs to be scooped, please do so! Kitties make messes quickly and often. 🙂
Things to Mention to Potential Adopters
We do not allow our cats to be declawed after adoption
- We have a few declawed cats in our care and they can consider one of those if it’s a requirement.
- Declawing is a painful procedure that is equivalent to cutting the top knuckle off a human finger. It can cause pain, as well as aggression and litterbox issues
Cost of our cats: Cost includes spay/neuter, microchip, 30-day flea preventative, dewormer, and age-appropriate vaccinations (kittens under 4 months are not eligible for rabies yet). We have a 1-week sleepover period - if it isn’t the right fit, you can return the kitty for a refund or choose another kitty.
- Kittens under 6 months of age are $75, or buy one get one free. They do so well as pairs (they entertain each other, especially at 3:00am, and can teach each other appropriate cat behavior), so we offer this deal at all times.
- Cats 6 months of age and older are $60 (we do a 2 for $100 deal)
We prefer the cats we adopt out to be inside-only pets. There are some special cases where we make exceptions … but no kittens should be indoor/outdoor cats. We have some adults that have previously lived outside that we’d be willing to adopt to people wanting indoor/outdoor cats, but their primary way of living should be inside.
Cat Care Worker Role
Daily chores include scooping, providing food and water, changing out linens (only if really dirty), and cleaning/tidying up the cages.
Stop by any time during open hours
- Monday-Saturday 9:00am-9:00pm / Sunday 10:00am-7:00pm
- It’s best if you don’t go during M&G hours (6-8 pm) to limit people in the room, but if that’s the only time you can go, feel free to go then.
Food is in the labeled containers against the wall
- Each cat’s bio sheet (above the large cage) says what food they are eating
- Please give the correct food listed so we don’t have cats with diarrhea!
Clean bowls are in the cabinet under the large cage. Dirty bowls can be washed in the breakroom sink around the corner. [The door to the adoption center locks behind you so make sure it doesn’t close all the way!] The breakroom is the door directly across from the bathroom. There is dishwashing soap in the roll cart in the adoption area.
When scooping litterboxes, you can use the small plastic bags hanging from the back of the door. It helps contain the smell better than just scooping into the big garbage can.
Fresh linens and toys are stored above the cages in a cubby
- They do not need to be changed daily - only remove if they are dirty (we don’t want to do laundry more often than necessary!)
- Make sure they have plenty of toys - they get bored.
- Put dirty linens and toys in the white laundry basket.
- We’ve put sticky tape on the shelves in each cage so the linens stay on the shelf instead of being pushed off constantly. If the tape is no longer sticky, please take off the old tape and apply new tape (in the roll cart in the white-topped bin).
- Litter is in the white storage bin under the paper towel dispenser (the lid pushes back rather than lift up). If it is out of litter, please let a PetSmart employee know so they can replace it. PETSMART PROVIDES THE LITTER. WE PROVIDE EVERYTHING ELSE.
- Extra tape for the linens and supplies are in the roll cart by the bench
Completing an Adoption
VERY IMPORTANT: There are TWO steps to complete and they cannot leave without completing both OUR adoption contract/fee payment AND PETSMART’S adoption form.
- Second Chance contract/payment:
- When the adopter chooses which cat(s)/kitten(s) they want, text Lauren (573-239-0428) with the adopter’s name and the name of the cat(s).
- She will then create the SC contract/payment and it will be sent via text message to the adopter. There is nothing YOU need to do after telling Lauren the information above - except to confirm you see the “thanks for adopting” screen before letting them leave.
- If the adopter pays with cash or check, put it in an envelope with the cat’s name and take it to the SC Office (201 W. Broadway, Bldg 3, Suite H)--put in the mail slot (Giulia’s door).
- Petsmart adoption contract:
- While you’re waiting for the SC contract to come to the adopter, use your cell phone (or you can ask at the front checkout register to borrow their iPad) to go to https://ame.petloyalty.co/
- User: JacksonLa@missouri.edu Pass: SC1985cats
- Choose the cat they’re adopting (if they’re adopting more than one, there will be a place to add another animal momentarily)
- Click “Process Adoption” next to that cat
- If they are adopting more than one kitty, click “add pet to adoption” at the top of the page and select the additional cat
- Select “Cash or payment outside AME” REGARDLESS OF HOW THEY’RE PAYING - this indicates that they are paying on our own contract and are NOT using the Petsmart system to make payment.
- Hit confirm and have the adopter fill out their information
Tell the adopter that they will/already have received an email from AdopterLuv (ShelterLuv’s adopter portion) with all of their medical information. Hard copies of any rabies certificates or microchip medallions will be mailed when the sleepover period is complete.
Take a picture of the adopter and their new kitty! Please post on the SC Volunteers Facebook page - fosters definitely want to see their kitties going home!
Send them home with a Ziploc bag of the cat’s food (baggies are in the roll cart). Our adult cats eat Purina One Indoor Advantage / kittens eat Purina One Healthy Kitten unless noted on their cage card.
After Adoption
Remove the cage card from the outside area AND above the large cage. Put all in the BACK pocket of the grey Second Chance binder (in roll cart).
Remove the cat’s rabies certificate and medical history sheet(s) from the white PetSmart binder and put them in the wire basket - a PetSmart employee will pick these up each day and must match what was entered in the iPad.
Put the dirty linens and toys in the laundry basket. If it’s getting full, please text Lauren or Christina!
Empty litterbox into trash can. Leave the dirty litterbox on the floor next to the trash can (employees will pick them up/clean them).
Sweep litter out of the cage and wipe the cage with cleaner (including the glass).
Put in new linens, litterbox, empty bowls and toys for the next cat.
- New litterboxes and bowls are underneath the large cage
- New linens and toys are in a cubby above the cages. If we’re running low, text Lauren or Christina!
- If the tape is no longer sticky, please pull off the previous tape and apply new tape (it’s in the roll cart)
